Who Was Richard Blayney?

Richard Blayney was the third son of Henry Blayney, 2nd Baron Blayney. His mother was Jane Moore. He followed in his family's footsteps by becoming involved in politics.

Early Political Roles

In 1656, Richard Blayney was given an important job by Oliver Cromwell. He became the Custos Rotulorum of County Monaghan. This title meant he was the chief keeper of the county's records. He also helped manage the local justice system.

That same year, he became a Member of Parliament. He represented the areas of Cavan, Fermanagh, and Monaghan. He served in the Second Protectorate Parliament. This was the government assembly during the time Oliver Cromwell ruled England.

Later Government Service

On February 9, 1659, Richard Blayney received another important appointment. Richard Cromwell, Oliver's son, made him the Escheator of Ulster. An Escheator was an official who managed land that went back to the king. This happened when someone died without an heir.

After the Stuart Restoration, the old royal family returned to power. Richard Blayney continued his political career. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament for Ireland. He represented County Monaghan. He served in this role from 1661 to 1666.

Becoming a Baron

In 1669, Richard Blayney inherited a special title. He became the Baron Blayney after his older brother passed away. A baron is a noble title, part of the "peerage." This meant he was a lord. He died the very next year, in 1670.
