Richard Brunton (born around 1749 – died September 8, 1832) was an artist from Britain and America. He is best known for his pictures showing scenes from the American Revolutionary War.

Early Life and Military Service

Richard Brunton said he was born in Birmingham, England in 1749. When he was about 17 years old, in 1766, he worked as an apprentice for Joseph Troughton. An apprentice learns a skill or trade from an experienced person.

Later, in 1774, Brunton joined the army. He was a soldier in the 38th Regiment of Foot, which was a British army group. He arrived in Boston on July 6, 1774. In June 1779, he left his army duties near Verplanck's Point, New York.

Family and Travels

On October 14, 1779, Richard Brunton married Polly Fullerton. In January 1783, Richard and Polly traveled to Groton, Massachusetts. They later moved to Pepperell. The couple had a son, but sadly, their baby passed away in March 1783.

Later Years and Artistry

Richard Brunton continued to live in America. He returned to Groton, Massachusetts where he passed away in 1832. While the original text mentions some legal troubles, the most important thing to remember about Richard Brunton is his art. He created important pictures that help us understand what the American Revolutionary War was like. His drawings and engravings give us a glimpse into history.
