Sir Richard Bulkeley (born 1533, died 1621) was an important person from Wales. He lived in Beaumaris, Anglesey and Lewisham. He was a politician and worked for Queen Elizabeth I. He was a Member of Parliament in 1563 and again from 1604 to 1614.

Sir Richard Bulkeley's Life

Richard Bulkeley was the oldest son of Sir Richard Bulkeley. His mother was Margaret.

Early Career and Roles

He became the Constable of Beaumaris Castle in 1561. This meant he was in charge of the castle. In 1562, he was chosen as the first Mayor of Beaumaris. A year later, in 1563, he became a Member of Parliament for Anglesey. His father helped him get this important job. He was also appointed High Sheriff of Anglesey in 1570.

Challenges and Royal Connections

After his father passed away, there was a disagreement. Richard Bulkeley had problems with his stepmother, Agnes Needham. She was accused of wrongdoing, but a jury found her innocent.

Richard Bulkeley was made a knight in London in 1577. This was a special honor given by the Queen. He was involved in some disagreements in Wales. These included issues with the Earl of Leicester and Owen Wood.

Owen Wood claimed that Bulkeley was unfair to the people of Beaumaris. He also suggested Bulkeley was involved in the 1586 Babington plot. This plot was a plan against Queen Elizabeth I. However, the Privy Council cleared Bulkeley of these charges. The Privy Council was a group of advisors to the Queen.

Bulkeley was known for working closely with Queen Elizabeth. He even hosted her at his home in Lewisham. In 1602, the Queen made him a member of the Council of the Marches of Wales. This council helped govern parts of Wales.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1604, Bulkeley was elected as a Member of Parliament for Anglesey again. He was re-elected in 1614. He served on the Council of the Marches of Wales once more in 1617. In 1618, he established the family home at Baron Hill.

Sir Richard Bulkeley was buried in Beaumaris on June 28, 1621. He was 88 years old. His son, also named Richard, took over after him.

Sir Richard Bulkeley was married two times. His first wife was Catherine, who passed away in 1573. His second wife was Mary, whom he married in 1576. Mary was the daughter of William Burgh.

Notable Family Members

His son, Thomas, received a special title in 1644. He became Viscount Bulkeley. This was because he supported the King during a difficult time. Three of his grandsons also held the title of Viscount.

Richard Bulkeley's younger half-brother was Lancelot Bulkeley. Lancelot later became the Archbishop of Dublin.
