Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Richard Caddick (1740–1819) was an English scholar who lived a long time ago. He was a Hebraist, which means he was an expert in the Hebrew language. He helped revise a translation of the New Testament, which is part of the Christian Bible. He also added his own translation of a section called the Epistle to the Romans.

Besides his work on the Bible, Richard Caddick wrote a book to help others learn Hebrew. It was called Hebrew made Easy, or an Introduction to the Hebrew Language.

Life of Richard Caddick

Richard Caddick was born in 1740. He was baptized in 1741 at a Unitarian church in Birmingham, England. He went to a famous university called Christ Church, Oxford. He was a very educated person, earning two degrees there. He received his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in 1776 and his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in 1799.

His Writings and Ideas

In 1802, Caddick published three sermons. Sermons are speeches given in a church. His sermons were titled 'True Christianity,’ 'Peace the Christian's Happiness,’ and 'Counsel for Christians.'

A few years later, in 1805, he had big plans for more books. He suggested printing a special version of the Book of Common Prayer in both Hebrew and English. He also wanted to create a version of the Old and New Testaments (parts of the Bible) with notes, also in Hebrew and English. He even planned to publish a collection of sermons he had given in London churches. However, it seems that these books were never actually printed.

Later Years and Passing

For the last 40 years of his life, Richard Caddick lived in or near London. He lived in different areas like Whitehall, Islington, and Fulham. He passed away in Fulham on May 30, 1819.
