Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Richard Denys (born around 1525 – died 1593 or 1594) was an English politician. He came from Cold Ashton in Gloucestershire.

Who Was Richard Denys?

Richard Denys was an important person in English politics during the 1500s. He served as a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

Richard Denys's Family Life

Richard was the oldest son of Sir Walter Denys, who was also well-known in their local area. Even though his family was important, Richard's inheritance (what he received from his family) wasn't as much as you might expect for someone of his social standing.

Around 1557, Richard Denys married Anne St John. Anne was the daughter of another Member of Parliament, Sir John St. John from Bletsoe, Bedfordshire. Richard and Anne had a large family with four sons and six daughters.

Richard Denys's Political Career

Richard Denys became a Member (MP) in the Parliament of England. This was a big role, as MPs represented different parts of England and helped decide important matters for the country.

He was elected as an MP for two different areas:

  • In 1547, he represented the town of Bath.
  • In 1563, he represented the larger area of Gloucestershire.

When Richard was first elected in 1547, his uncle, Maurice Denys, was also elected as an MP. His brothers-in-law, Oliver St. John and Francis Russell, were also Members of Parliament at the same time. This shows that his family had many connections in the government.
