Richard Devereux was born around the year 1513. His father was Walter Devereux, 1st Viscount Hereford, a well-known nobleman. His mother was Mary Grey.
His Work and Public Life
Richard Devereux lived in a town called Carmarthen in Wales. He held several important jobs there. From 1534 to 1535, he was a Bailiff, which meant he helped manage the town's affairs. He also served as the Mayor of Carmarthen from 1536 to 1537.
In 1535, he was a Commissioner for the St. David's diocese. This role involved looking after certain church finances. He also supported local church leaders in their disagreements with the Bishop of St. David's.
Richard Devereux was known for being quite lively. When he ran for Parliament in 1542, some people complained that he encouraged a bit too much excitement in Carmarthen. Later, in 1546, he was asked by the King's special council, the Privy Council, about his opinions on some religious practices.
He also held important roles in other parts of Wales. In 1537, he was a Deputy Steward in areas like Arwystli and Cyfeiliog. He supported his father in some disagreements with other powerful families and towns.
Serving the King Abroad
In 1543, Richard Devereux joined a small army led by Sir John Wallop. They went to France to help Emperor Charles V in a war. He was even mentioned in a report about this military trip.
Justice and Law Roles
Richard Devereux was a Deputy Justice and Chamberlain for South Wales during King Henry VIII's rule. This meant he helped with legal matters and managed royal finances in the region. He also served as a Justice of the Peace in several areas, including Cardiff and Pembrokeshire in 1543, and Gloucester and Monmouthshire in 1547. From 1543 until his death, he was the Custos Rotulorum of Carmarthenshire, which meant he was the main keeper of the county's records.
Becoming a Knight
On February 20, 1547, Richard Devereux was made a Knight of the Bath. This special honor happened at the coronation of the new king, Edward VI of England. Later that same year, he became a member of the council that governed the border regions of Wales.
Parliamentary Role
Richard Devereux was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Carmarthenshire in 1545. He was elected again in 1547, just before he passed away.
His Family Life
Richard Devereux married Dorothea Hastings on July 1, 1536. She was the daughter of George Hastings, 1st Earl of Huntingdon and Anne Stafford.
They had four children:

His Death
Richard Devereux died on October 13, 1547. He was buried in a church in London called St. Olave Hart Street. His tombstone said he was "Richarde Deuereux, sonne and Heyre to the lord Ferrers of Chartley." After his death, records showed that his wife would manage some of his land, called Lamphey, and then it would go to his son George. Other land, like the family manor of Bodenham, would go to his son Walter.
