Richard Franz Joseph Heuberger (born June 18, 1850, in Graz, Austria – died October 28, 1914, in Vienna, Austria) was an Austrian composer, music critic, and teacher. He wrote many operas and operettas. Today, he is best known for his popular operetta Der Opernball.

Richard Heuberger's Life

Richard Heuberger was born in Graz, a city in Austria. His father made bandages. Richard first studied engineering, but he decided to change his path in 1876 and focus on music instead.

He studied music at the Graz Conservatory. One of his teachers there was Robert Fuchs. Later, Richard moved to Vienna, which was a very important city for music. In Vienna, he became a well-known musician and teacher.

His Career in Music

Heuberger held several important positions in Vienna. He was the chorus master for the Wiener Akademischer Gesangverein. He also conducted the Wiener Singakademie and directed the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, which was a men's choral group.

From 1902, he taught music at the Vienna Conservatory. One of his students was the famous conductor Clemens Krauss.

Richard Heuberger wrote many different types of music, including operas, ballets, and songs for choirs. However, his most famous work is the operetta Der Opernball, which means "The Opera Ball." He composed this fun and lively piece in 1898.
