Richard Legh, a Member of Parliament

Richard Legh (born May 7, 1634 – died August 31, 1687) was an important English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, at different times between 1656 and 1678.

Early Life and Education

Richard Legh was the son of Reverend Thomas Legh. His father was a doctor of divinity and a church leader in Cheshire and Lancashire. Richard inherited a large estate called Lyme Park in Cheshire in 1643 from his uncle, Francis Legh.

Richard went to school in Winwick, Lancashire. Later, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge, starting in 1649. He also joined Gray's Inn in 1653, which was a place where people studied to become lawyers.

Richard Legh's Political Career

Richard Legh was elected to Parliament several times. Being a Member of Parliament (MP) meant he helped make laws and represent the people.

Serving in the Protectorate Parliament

In 1656, Richard Legh was chosen to be an MP for Cheshire. He served in what was called the Second Protectorate Parliament. He was elected again in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament. These parliaments were part of the government during a time when England was not ruled by a king.

Serving in the King's Parliament

When the king returned to power in 1660, Richard Legh was elected MP for Newton. He served in the Convention Parliament. He was re-elected in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to hold this seat in Parliament until 1679.

Family Life

Richard Legh married Elizabeth Chicheley. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Chicheley, who was from Wimpole, Cambridgeshire.

Later Life and Legacy

Richard Legh passed away at the age of 53. He died at his home in Lyme, Cheshire, and was buried in Winwick, Lancashire.
