Richard Dafydd Vivian Llewellyn Lloyd (born Richard Herbert Vivian Lloyd; 8 December 1906 – 30 November 1983) was a famous English writer. He was known by his pen name Richard Llewellyn. He is best remembered for his 1939 novel How Green Was My Valley. This book tells the story of life in a coal mining village in the South Wales Valleys.

Richard Llewellyn was born in Hendon, England, in 1906. His parents were from Wales. He was the second child and only son. After he died, people found out that his claim of being born in St Davids, Wales, was not true.
Richard loved to travel a lot throughout his life. Before World War II, he worked in hotels. He also wrote a play and even worked as a coal miner. This experience helped him write his most famous novel.
In 1940, his book How Green Was My Valley won a special award in the U.S. It was voted the favorite novel by booksellers.
During World War II, Richard became a Captain in the Welsh Guards. Sadly, his sister and her two daughters died during the bombing of London in 1944.
After the war, he worked as a journalist. He reported on the Nuremberg Trials. He also became a screenwriter for MGM. Richard lived in many different countries. These included Italy, China, Brazil, Argentina, Kenya, and Israel. He also lived in Britain and Ireland.
Richard Llewellyn was married twice. His first wife was Nona Theresa Catherine Sonsteby. They married in 1952 and divorced in 1968. His second wife was Susan Frances Heimann. They married in 1974.
Richard Llewellyn died in Dublin, Ireland, in 1983. He passed away from a heart attack.

Several of Richard Llewellyn's novels were about Wales. His most famous book is How Green Was My Valley (1939). This book became very popular around the world. It was even made into a classic Hollywood film.
The book showed the way of life in the South Wales Valleys coal mining towns. Richard spent a short time there with his grandfather. Three more books followed this famous story.
