Richard Lloyd (Royalist) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Richard Lloyd (born February 23, 1606 – died May 5, 1676) was an important English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's parliament, at different times between 1628 and 1676. He also fought as a soldier for the King's side, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Education

Richard Lloyd was born in Wales. His father was Evan Lloyd, and his mother was Janet ap Ieuan. He went to Gray's Inn in 1618, which was a place where people studied to become lawyers. He also attended Wadham College, Oxford, a famous university, and earned his degree in 1624.

In 1628, when he was still quite young, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Montgomery. This meant he represented the people of that area in the House of Commons. However, he only served for a short time because King Charles I decided to rule the country without Parliament for eleven years. Richard Lloyd became a lawyer in 1635.

A Career in Politics and War

In April 1640, Richard Lloyd was again elected as an MP, this time for Newcastle-under-Lyme. He also worked as the chief lawyer for North Wales from 1640 to 1647.

When the English Civil War began, he supported the King. He was made a knight in 1642, which meant he was given the title "Sir." During the war, he was a colonel, leading a group of soldiers called dragoons for the Royalist army. He was also in charge of Holt Castle from 1645 to 1647. His castle was one of the last places to surrender to the Parliament's army.

After the war, he was allowed to leave the country and live in Calais, France. His family was allowed to keep his property. He returned to England when the King was put back on the throne.

After the Civil War

After the King returned in 1660, Sir Richard Lloyd continued his public service. He became the chief lawyer for North Wales again, a position he held until 1671. He also served as a chief judge in the Brecon area and was a J.P. (a local judge) for many counties in Wales.

In 1661, he was elected as an MP for two different places, Cardiff and Radnorshire. He chose to represent Radnorshire in what was known as the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to work in various important roles, helping to manage local government and support the King's rule.

Later Life and Family

Sir Richard Lloyd passed away at the age of 70. He had married Margaret Sneyd in 1632. They had one son and three daughters.
