Richard Major was the son of John Maijor, who was a respected leader and mayor in the city of Southampton. In 1639, Richard bought a large estate called Hursley Park and Lodge in Hampshire. He also held a special job called High Sheriff of Hampshire from 1639 to 1640. This role was like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.

Family Connections

Richard Major had a daughter named Dorothy. She married Richard Cromwell, who was the oldest son of Oliver Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell was a very powerful leader who became the Lord Protector of England in 1653. When Oliver Cromwell died in 1658, his son Richard Cromwell took over as Lord Protector. This made Richard Major's family very connected to the most powerful family in England at the time!

Richard Major was involved in the government during the English Commonwealth. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Hampshire in two different parliaments:
