Richard Pate (1516–1588) was an important English landowner and politician. He was also known as Pates. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucester in the years 1559 and again from 1563 to 1567. An MP is a person chosen to represent a group of people in a parliament, which is a place where laws are made for the country.

Who Was Richard Pate?

Richard Pate was born in a town called Cheltenham. He was the nephew of another famous person named Richard Pate, who was a bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church.

His Early Life and Education

Richard Pate went to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which is a part of Oxford University. People who have studied at a college or university are sometimes called "alumni."

A Gift for Education

Richard Pate cared a lot about education. He gave money and property to his old college, Corpus Christi. He had a special condition for this gift: three-quarters of the money from his property had to be used for a good cause. This money was meant to start and support a school in Cheltenham. It was also used to help an almshouse, which is a place that provides housing for poor people.

This school was started in 1574. It is still open today and is known as Pate's Grammar School. Richard Pate also left some property in Oxford to Corpus Christi College.

His Legacy Lives On

Richard Pate passed away in 1588. He is buried in Gloucester Cathedral, a very old and beautiful church. On his tomb, there is a special message written in Latin: Patebit tum quod latuit. This means "what is hidden will be revealed."

This Latin phrase is still used today! It is the motto for Pate's Grammar School. It is also the motto for the Old Patesians Rugby Football Club, a sports team. There is even a primary school named after him, called the Richard Pate School.
