Richie Hogan, born on August 8, 1988, is a famous Irish hurler. He played as a midfielder for the Kilkenny county team from 2007 until 2023.

Richie was born in Waterford but grew up in Danesfort, County Kilkenny. He started playing hurling seriously when he was at St Kieran's College. He joined the Kilkenny minor team at 15, then moved up to the under-21 team. By 2007, he was part of the senior team.

Richie became a key player for Kilkenny. He won seven All-Ireland medals, seven Leinster medals, and four National Hurling League medals. He also played in two All-Ireland finals that his team didn't win.

As part of the Leinster team, Richie won one Railway Cup medal. With his club, Danesfort, he won an All-Ireland and Leinster junior club title. He also won several other club championships.

Richie's brother, Paddy, also played for the Kilkenny senior team. Their relative, D. J. Carey, is considered one of the greatest hurlers ever.

Richie Hogan's Club Hurling Career

Richie Hogan played his club hurling with the Danesfort club.

Winning Junior Titles with Danesfort

In 2006, Richie won a junior county championship with Danesfort. They beat Tullogher-Rosbercon in the final. This was Danesfort's first junior county title since 1930.

After that, Danesfort won the Leinster junior club title by defeating Knockbridge. Richie then helped his team win an All-Ireland junior club title. They beat Clooney Gaels 2–16 to 2–8 in the final. Richie was the top scorer in that game, getting 1–6. He was also named on the Kilkenny club all-star team for that year.

Danesfort's Intermediate Success

Danesfort reached the Intermediate league final three years in a row (2009, 2010, and 2011). They lost to Rower Inistiogue in 2009 and 2011, and to Mullinvat in 2010.

In 2011, Richie captained Danesfort to win the County Intermediate final. They beat Rower Inistiogue. Early goals from Richie and Robbie Walsh, along with great play from Kilkenny players Paddy Hogan and Paul Murphy, helped Danesfort win. This was the club's first Intermediate title since 1931.

Richie Hogan's County Hurling Journey

Richie Hogan started playing for Kilkenny at a young age.

Early Days: Minor and Under-21 Teams

Richie first played for the Kilkenny minor team in 2004. He won his first Leinster medal that year, beating Dublin. In the All-Ireland final against Galway, Richie scored a point in injury time to get a 1–18 to 3–12 draw. Galway won the replay by a single point.

In 2006, Kilkenny won the Leinster minor title again, beating Carlow 4–22 to 1–5. This gave Richie his second Leinster medal.

Richie joined the Kilkenny under-21 team in 2006. In the All-Ireland final against Tipperary, Richie scored a last-second goal to make it a 2–14 draw. In the replay, Kilkenny won 1–11 to 0–11, giving Richie his first All-Ireland medal.

In 2008, Richie won his first Leinster medal with a big win over Offaly. Kilkenny then faced Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. Kilkenny won 2–13 to 0–15, securing another All-Ireland title.

Richie won a second Leinster under-21 medal in 2009. Kilkenny beat Dublin 2–20 to 1–19. However, they lost the All-Ireland final to Clare by one point.

Playing for the Senior Kilkenny Team

Richie joined the Kilkenny senior team in 2007. He was part of the team that won the Leinster and All-Ireland titles that year, even though he didn't play in a game.

On June 15, 2008, Richie made his senior championship debut against Offaly. He won more Leinster and All-Ireland medals that year as a substitute.

In 2009, Richie won his first National League medal. Kilkenny beat Tipperary in an exciting extra-time game. Richie scored 1–10 and was named man of the match. He played in the All-Ireland final against Tipperary, where Kilkenny won 2–22 to 0–23. Richie had to leave the game due to an ankle injury, but he still earned his first All-Ireland medal from playing on the field.

Becoming a Key Player

In 2010, Kilkenny beat Galway to win the Leinster final, giving Richie his third Leinster medal. Kilkenny aimed for a fifth straight All-Ireland title but lost to Tipperary in the final.

Kilkenny continued to dominate Leinster in 2011. They beat Dublin 4–17 to 1–15, giving Richie his fourth Leinster medal. Kilkenny then faced Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. Goals from Michael Fennelly and Richie helped Kilkenny win 2–17 to 1–16. Richie won his second All-Ireland medal and later received his first All-Star award.

In 2012, Richie suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung in a game. However, he recovered quickly and played in the league final. Kilkenny beat Cork 3–21 to 0–16, giving Richie his second league medal. Kilkenny lost to Galway in the Leinster final but met them again in the All-Ireland final. The game ended in a draw, so they played a replay. Kilkenny won the replay 3–22 to 3–11, and Richie earned his fifth All-Ireland medal.

In 2013, Richie won his third league medal as Kilkenny beat Tipperary 2–17 to 0–20.
