Richard James Bragnalo (born December 1, 1951) is a retired Canadian-Italian ice hockey player. He played as a centre, which is a key attacking position in hockey. Richard played 145 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Washington Capitals between 1976 and 1979. Most of his long career, from 1974 to 1992, was spent playing in the top Italian hockey league, Serie A. He also proudly represented the Italian national team in six World Championships.
Playing Career Highlights
Richard Bragnalo was born in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. After playing college hockey at the University of Denver, he joined the Washington Capitals in 1976. He played for the Capitals for parts of four seasons.
Later, Richard moved to Italy to play hockey in the Italian Serie A. He played for teams like Val Pusteria Wolves (formerly EV Brunico). Because of his Italian family background, he was able to play for the Italian national team many times. This included playing in the top group (A Pool) of the 1982 and 1983 World Championships. In 1990, he joined HC Milano Saima. He scored the winning goal that helped Milano win the league championship in the 1990-91 season. Richard retired from playing hockey in 1992.
International Play
Richard Bragnalo played for the Italian national team in several international tournaments. He represented Italy at six World Championships. These included both the top division (WC) and the second division (WC-B) tournaments. Playing for his country was a big part of his career after moving to Italy.
