College Basketball Journey
Rick Hughes finished high school at Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1991. After that, he went to Thomas More College. He was an amazing player there for four years, from 1992 to 1996.
Rick's College Achievements
Rick was the only player in his college conference (which no longer exists) to achieve many great things. He was named Rookie of the Year in his first year. He was also Player of the Year four times. Plus, he was chosen for the Conference First Team four times. He won Tournament MVP three times and was on the Tournament First Team four times. Rick was also the top scorer in the conference for all four years.
During his junior and senior years, Rick was named a Division 3 All-American. He left Thomas More College as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,605 points. He still holds ten other records at the school! In 2002, Rick Hughes was honored by being chosen for Thomas More College's Hall of Fame.
Professional Basketball Career
After college, Rick Hughes was not chosen in the NBA draft. This meant he had to try out for teams as a "free agent." He earned a spot with the Phoenix Suns for their Summer Pro League in Los Angeles.
Playing Overseas
Rick then went to Cyprus to play professional basketball. He did very well in his first season there. He scored over 26 points and grabbed more than 13 rebounds per game. His great playing caught the eye of NBA teams again, this time the Atlanta Hawks.
Because of a possible NBA lockout, Rick went back overseas. He played in Lebanon during the 1998–1999 season. There, he averaged over 36 points and 15 rebounds per game.
Success in Europe
After a short time with the Dallas Mavericks, Rick returned to Europe in January 2000. This was the next big step in his professional career. He played in many countries, including Cyprus, Lebanon, Italy, Spain, and France.
Rick won many championships and awards during his time playing internationally. He helped teams get promoted to higher divisions. He also won MVP awards and many scoring titles. This showed how well he could adapt and compete at a high level, even as he got older.
