He holds many records at Thomas More College. He was the only player in his conference to be named Rookie of the Year. He was also Player of the Year four times! Rick was chosen for the Conference First Team four times and was the Tournament MVP three times. He led the league in scoring for all four years he played.
During his junior and senior years, Rick was named a Division 3 All-American. He left Thomas More College as the school's all-time top scorer with 2,605 points. He still holds ten other records there! In 2002, Rick Hughes was honored by being added to Thomas More College's Hall of Fame.
Professional Career: Playing Around the World
Even though Rick Hughes was a great college player, no NBA team picked him in the draft. So, he had to try out as a free agent. He earned a spot with the Phoenix Suns for their Summer Pro League in Los Angeles.
After that, Rick went to Cyprus to play basketball professionally. He did very well in his first season overseas. He scored more than 26 points and grabbed over 13 rebounds per game. His strong play caught the attention of another NBA team, the Atlanta Hawks.
Because of a possible NBA lockout, Rick decided to go back overseas. This time, he played in Lebanon. During the 1998–1999 season, he had an amazing year, averaging over 36 points and 15 rebounds per game.
After a short time with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, Rick returned to Europe in 2000. He played for many teams in different countries, including Cyprus, Lebanon, Italy, Spain, and France. Rick won several championships and awards, including MVP honors and many scoring titles. This showed how well he could play and adapt, even as he got older.
