The Ridgeley School is an important historic building located in Capitol Heights, Maryland. It was built in 1927 and served as a school for African American children during a time when schools were segregated.
This building is a special type of school called a Rosenwald school. These schools were built with help from the Rosenwald Fund, which was created by Julius Rosenwald. He was a leader of Sears, Roebuck and Company. His fund helped build thousands of schools for African American children across the Southern United States.
A Special School Building
The Ridgeley School is a single-story building made of wood. It has a unique roof shape called a hip roof. When it was first built in 1927, it had two classrooms. Later, another classroom was added to make more space for students.
This school is one of only four two-room Rosenwald schools built in Prince George's County. This makes it a very important part of local history.
Restoring History
Over the years, the school building changed. From 2009 to 2011, the Ridgeley School went through a big restoration project. This means it was carefully repaired and brought back to its original look.
After the restoration, the building was turned into a local history museum. Now, visitors can learn about the school's past and the history of the community.
National Recognition
Because of its historical importance, the Ridgeley School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
