A Look at Ridley Hall's History
Ridley Hall started in 1881. It was named after Nicholas Ridley. He was an important Anglican leader in the 1500s. He was also a martyr, meaning he died for his beliefs.
The first leader of Ridley Hall was Handley Moule. He later became a Bishop in Durham. Ridley Hall was set up with the same rules as its sister college, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Both colleges can choose two people to be on the other college's main council.
Ridley Hall Today
Ridley Hall offers special degrees called Common Awards. These degrees are approved by Durham University. Even though Ridley Hall is not a main college of the University of Cambridge, it works closely with the university's religion department. Some students can even get degrees from Cambridge University itself.
Ridley Hall is part of the Cambridge Theological Federation. This is a group of colleges that work together. Other colleges in this group include Westcott House and Westminster College.
Ridley Hall teaches a type of Christian belief called evangelical theology. It is one of three Church of England colleges that are "Open Evangelical." The other two are Trinity College in Bristol and Cranmer Hall in Durham.
In November 2023, it was announced that Dr. Isabelle Hamley would become the new principal. She took over the role in April 2024. The previous principal, Michael Volland, left to become a Bishop of Birmingham.
The college also publishes an academic magazine called Anvil.
