Rifat Hadžiselimović is a famous Bosnian geneticist. A geneticist is a scientist who studies genetics, which is how living things inherit traits from their parents. He was born in Šiprage, Bosnia and Herzegovina on January 7, 1944. In 2013, after working for over 45 years, he became an "Emeritus" professor. This means he retired but still keeps his title and can continue to advise. Today, he works as a scientific adviser at the Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Sarajevo.

Rifat Hadžiselimović became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2018. This is a special group of top scientists and artists.

Becoming a Scientist: Rifat Hadžiselimović's Journey

Early Education and University Life

Rifat Hadžiselimović finished high school in Banja Luka. In 1962, he started studying at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Sarajevo. He worked hard and graduated in 1966 as a Biology teacher.

He continued his studies and earned his master's degree in Biology in 1971. He studied at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics at the University of Zagreb in Croatia. His master's project looked at how certain traits changed in human groups over time.

In 1976, he earned his PhD in biology from the Faculty of Science at the University of Sarajevo. His PhD research focused on how specific blood traits are passed down in people from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Teaching and Research at the University

Since 1966, Professor Hadžiselimović has worked at the Faculty of Science, University of Sarajevo. He started as an Assistant Lecturer. Over the years, he became an Assistant Professor in 1977, an Associate Professor in 1980, and a full Professor in 1984.

He taught many important subjects to students. These included Human Genetics, which is about how human traits are inherited. He also taught Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, which involve changing living things for useful purposes. Other subjects were Molecular Biology (the study of life at a tiny, molecular level), Evolution (how life changes over time), Bioanthropology (the study of human biology and evolution), and Biomedicine (using biology in medicine).

Leading Important Scientific Work

Professor Hadžiselimović was an active member of the Anthropological Society of Yugoslavia. He also helped start the Association of Genetics in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From 1984 to 1986, he was the Head of the Biology Department.

He played a big role in creating the "Postgraduate study of biological sciences" program. This program helps students continue their education after their first degree. He led this program from 1994 to 2003. From 2007, he was in charge of the "Genetics" part of the program.

From 1987 to 2001, he was the Director of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (INGEB). This institute does important research in genetics. After that, from 2001, he led the DNA Project. This project worked with the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). They used DNA to help identify people who were missing. He also served as a Scientific Advisor for INGEB. From 2006 to 2012, he was the head of the institute's Board of Directors.
