Rima Das is a talented Indian filmmaker known for her amazing movies. Her 2017 film, Village Rockstars, won many awards both in India and around the world. It was even chosen to represent India at the 90th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film. This was a big deal because it was the first film in the Assamese language to be sent to the Oscars! Village Rockstars also won India's top film award, the National Award, for Best Film and Best Editor.

In 2018, a magazine called GQ India recognized Rima Das as one of the 50 most influential young people in India. She also helps promote gender equality in cinema as an ambassador for the Toronto International Film Festival's Share Her Journey campaign. Rima Das has been a judge at several film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival and the Zlin Film Festival for Children & Youth. She received a special doctorate degree from Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University in February 2018.

Rima Das's Filmmaking Journey

Rima Das started her filmmaking journey with a short film called Pratha in 2009. She then began working on her first full-length movie, Antardrishti (Man with the Binoculars), in 2013. She filmed it using a regular camera in a village called Kalardiya. This film was shown at the Mumbai Film Festival and the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2016.

Becoming a One-Woman Film Crew

Rima Das is special because she often does almost everything herself for her films. She writes the story, directs the actors, produces the movie, edits it, and even handles the camera. She also helps with the art and costumes! What's even more amazing is that she didn't go to film school. She believes this helped her be more creative and true to her own ideas. She learned by watching many films from around the world. This helped her create her own unique style of filmmaking.

Success with Village Rockstars

Her second feature film, Village Rockstars (2017), brought her a lot of fame. Rima Das wrote, directed, edited, and produced this film all by herself. As mentioned, it was India's official entry for the Oscars and won the National Award for Best Film and Best Editor in April 2018. Village Rockstars tells the story of a young girl named Dhunu from an Assamese village. Dhunu dreams of owning a guitar and starting her own rock band.

New Films and Recognition

After Village Rockstars, Rima Das continued to make more films. Her 2018 film, Bulbul Can Sing, was first shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2019, she directed a short film called For Each Other and her first documentary-style film, Sunshine Dreamers.

In 2022, her film Tora's Husband had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was the first Indian film to be chosen for a special section there. Rima Das shared that making this film was very challenging because of the lockdowns and difficulties during the pandemic. She filmed it over two years in real places, showing the feelings of fear and restlessness that many people experienced.

Her latest film, Village Rockstars 2, premiered at the 29th Busan International Film Festival in 2024 and won the KIM Jiseok Award. She also directed My Melbourne in 2024.

Filmmaking Inspirations

Rima Das looks up to famous filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Ingmar Bergman, and Majid Majidi. Their work has influenced her own unique style of storytelling.
