Where is Rindoon Located?
Rindoon is found on a piece of land that sticks out into Lough Ree. It's about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) east of a place called Lecarrow. This special spot made it a good place for a settlement long ago.
The Story of Rindoon: History and Archaeology
Rindoon was built a very long time ago, in the first half of the 13th century. This means it was built between the years 1200 and 1250.
Building the Castle and Town
The main castle at Rindoon was likely built around the year 1227. A person named Geoffrey de Marisco is thought to have built it. The castle was a strong fortress, and a town grew up around it. People lived and worked here, protected by the castle walls.
Why Rindoon Became a Ghost Town
Life in Rindoon didn't last forever. Towards the end of the 13th century and into the early 14th century, there was a big change in Ireland. Irish people started fighting to take back control of their lands. This period is sometimes called the "Gaelic resurgence."
During these times, Rindoon was attacked and badly damaged. It was "sacked," which means it was raided and destroyed. After these attacks, people left the town. Eventually, Rindoon was completely abandoned, becoming the fascinating ruins we see today. Archaeologists study these ruins to learn more about life in medieval Ireland.
