History of Ringgold

The area where Ringgold is today started to be settled in 1892. A landowner began selling pieces of land when the Rock Island Line railroad built a train track through the area.

The town was first named Harrisonia. It got this name from the landowner, Joe Harris. However, he later changed the name to Ringgold. He named it after his wife's family. A post office was also opened in Ringgold in the same year, 1892.

Because it was a place where train lines met, Ringgold became an important market town for the surrounding area. It grew quite a bit, and its population reached its highest point of about 400 people in the mid-1920s.

On January 1, 2006, a large wildfire caused a lot of damage in Ringgold. About half of the town was destroyed, and 32 homes burned down. This event was a big news story in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
