Discovering the Festival's History
Sarasota, Florida, has been an important place for the arts for a long time. This started way back in the 1920s.
John Ringling's Artistic Vision
John Ringling was a very famous person. He was a main founder of the Ringling Brothers Circus. He built his winter home right on Sarasota Bay. Later, in 1931, he finished building the amazing Ringling Museum of Art.
When John Ringling passed away in 1936, he gave the Museum of Art to the State of Florida. This made the museum even more famous around the world. Because of this, Sarasota also became home to many important places for opera, ballet, dance, and theater. The Ringling International Arts Festival continues this rich artistic tradition.
