Rio Grande Trail
The Paseo del Bosque Trail

The Rio Grande Valley State Park (RGVSP) is a special outdoor area in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was created in 1983. Even though it's called a "State Park," many different groups help manage it. These groups include local, state, and federal agencies, along with other organizations.

This park covers about 4,300 acres (17.4 square kilometers) of land. It stretches along both sides of the Rio Grande river. The park goes from the Sandia Pueblo in the north to the Isleta Pueblo in the south. The word "bosque" (pronounced BOSS-kay) is a local name for the woods. It describes the forest ecosystem found here, which is mostly made up of cottonwood trees. These trees grow in the river's floodplain, which is the flat land next to the river that sometimes gets flooded.

What Can You Do at the Park?

The Rio Grande Valley State Park is a great place for outdoor fun. It has sandy forest trails and a paved path called the Paseo del Bosque Multi-use Trail. You can also find ponds and wetlands that have been built within and near the forest.

How to Visit the Park

There are many places to enter the park around Albuquerque. These spots usually have parking, picnic areas, restrooms, and trash cans. You can enjoy the park in several ways:

  • Walking
  • Biking (non-motorized bikes only)
  • Horseback riding

If you bring your dog, please keep it on a leash. Also, remember to clean up after your pet. This helps keep the park healthy for everyone and for the plants and animals that live there.

Learning About Nature

Several organizations help manage parts of the park. They offer ways to learn about the local plants and animals. You can find paths with signs that show pictures and information. There are also visitor centers with hands-on exhibits and activities. These activities include guided nature walks, bird watching, talks, workshops, and festivals.

The Paseo del Bosque Trail

The Paseo del Bosque Trail is a popular paved path that runs next to the Rio Grande. It is about 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) long. This trail is perfect for walking, biking, and horseback riding.

History and Connections

The trail was built in the 1970s. It goes from the north to the south edges of Albuquerque. The trail is on the east side of the river, within the bosque. It connects many fun places, such as:

Sunset Magazine has even called the Paseo del Bosque Trail one of the "best bike trails in the West." It's also a favorite for horseback riders. There are parking areas big enough for horse trailers. In the North Valley, near the Los Ranchos open space, you can even find a feed store. This is a helpful stop for people traveling on horseback.

Trail Details and Safety

The main part of the trail is paved. In the Corrales Bosque area, there is also a dirt trail next to a ditchbank. Many short paths connect these two trails. Some bike riders enjoy riding very fast here, especially around the tight, blind curves. However, it's important to remember that this can be unsafe.

You might also find plants with thorns along the side trails. These thorns can puncture bicycle tires and even hiking shoes. It's a good idea to be careful, especially if you go off the main paved path.

The Paseo del Bosque Trail is a key part of a bigger trail that is being planned, called the Rio Grande Trail.
