Rio Marchenilla facts for kids

Marchenilla is a small river in the Cadiz province of Spain. It's located in an area called Campo de Gibraltar. The river is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) long.

Where Does the Marchenilla River Start and End?

The Marchenilla River begins its journey high up in the Sierra del Bujeo mountains. It starts at an altitude of about 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level. From there, it flows down a steep slope at the very beginning.

As it continues, the river passes close to the village of Algamasilla. Finally, the Marchenilla River reaches its end at Getares Beach, which is located south of the city of Algeciras. Here, its waters join the sea.

What Kind of Rocks Does the River Flow Through?

The Marchenilla River flows over different types of ancient rocks along its path. In its upper part, where it starts, the river runs over rocks from the Triassic period. These rocks are incredibly old!

In the middle part of the river, it flows over rocks from the Oligocene period. Then, as it gets closer to the sea, the river once again flows over Triassic rocks. This shows how the river cuts through different layers of Earth's history.
