What Does the Rio Uaupes Robber Frog Look Like?
These frogs are not very big. Adult male frogs are about 23 to 33 millimeters long. Female frogs are a bit larger, measuring 31 to 49 millimeters. This length is measured from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom).
Skin and Features
Their back skin feels a bit rough, like sandpaper, with small bumps. But their belly skin is smooth. They have a clear, oval-shaped eardrum called a tympanum. Their snout looks pointed from above but round from the side.
They have a clear ridge from their eye to their snout, called a canthus rostralis. Their fingers and toes have special pads or discs, which are bigger on some fingers and toes. They do not have webbed feet. Male frogs have vocal slits, which help them make calls.
Color Patterns
These frogs can have three main color patterns:
- Some are greenish-gray or light to dark brown. They might have no pattern or tiny black spots.
- Others have strong patterns. Their background color is brown or olive. They often have a "W" shape between their shoulders. They also have dark brown stripes across their body and legs.
- An in-between type has light to dark brown backs with unclear stripes. They might or might not have the "W" shape. Sometimes, they have a pattern that looks like lichen.
All types have dark brown stripes near their eyes and above their eardrums.
Where Do Rio Uaupes Robber Frogs Live?
Pristimantis vilarsi lives in the rainforests of low-lying areas. They are found at heights from about 100 to 1,230 meters above sea level. In Colombia, they usually live between 200 and 600 meters high.
Daily Life and Habitat
These frogs spend their time in the leaf litter on the forest floor. At night, you might see them on low plants, leaves, rocks, or mossy walls. Male frogs call out at night, probably to attract mates. We don't know where they lay their eggs.
This frog species seems to be able to handle some changes to its home. It is a common frog. Its living areas include several protected natural places.
