Rita Dolores Walters (born White; August 14, 1930 – February 17, 2020) was an important American politician. She made history as the first African-American woman elected to the Los Angeles City Council. She worked hard to serve her community in Los Angeles for many years.

Helping Schools and Libraries
Before joining the City Council, Walters served on the Los Angeles Unified School District's Board of Education. From 1979 to 1991, she helped guide the city's schools.
