Working for Los Angeles
Jan Perry was a member of the Los Angeles City Council for 12 years, from 2001 to 2013. She represented the Ninth District. During her time on the Council, she also held the important role of President Pro Tempore. This means she helped lead the Council meetings.
Perry was first elected in 2001. She took over from Councilwoman Rita Walters, for whom she had worked before. She was re-elected two more times, in 2005 and 2009.
Helping Communities
Jan Perry worked on several projects to improve the health and well-being of people in her district. She helped put rules in place for fast food restaurants. This was part of a bigger effort to fight high rates of obesity in the area.
She also supported creating more public parks. These parks give people places to be active outdoors. Perry also encouraged more grocery stores to open in her district. This made it easier for people to buy healthy food.
After the City Council
After leaving the City Council in 2013, Jan Perry continued to work for the City of Los Angeles. She became the general manager of the Los Angeles Economic & Workforce Development Department (EWDD). This department helps with jobs and economic growth in the city. She held this position until the end of 2018.
In 2022, Jan Perry ran for a seat in the United States Congress. She wanted to represent California's 37th congressional district. However, she was not elected.
Jan Perry Wetlands
One special project Jan Perry worked on was turning an old bus yard into a beautiful park and water treatment area. This area is now called "The Jan Perry Wetlands." It covers about 9 acres in South Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles City Council voted to name the park after her because of her hard work on the project. The wetlands help clean storm water before it flows into rivers and the ocean. It also provides a place for wildlife and offers educational opportunities for people to learn about nature. The project was finished in December 2011.
