River Banwy at Llanfair Caereinion

The River Banwy is a river in Powys, Wales. It's about 19 miles (30 kilometers) long. The Banwy is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. In this case, it flows into the River Vyrnwy.

Discovering the River Banwy

The River Banwy is an important part of the landscape in Powys. It winds its way through beautiful Welsh countryside.

Where the River Begins

The Banwy starts high up in the hills. Its very beginning is near a mountain called Moel y Llyn. At this point, it has a different name: Nant Cerrig-y-groes. This area is close to a road, the A458, which goes between the towns of Mallwyd and Welshpool.

The River's Journey

As the Banwy flows, it travels towards the east. Along its path, many smaller streams join it. These streams add more water to the river.

Joining Other Streams

One of the first places where the Banwy meets another stream is near a village called Y Foel. Here, it joins with the River Twrch. This meeting point is called a "confluence." A little further on, about two miles, another river joins the Banwy. This one is called the River Gam. The River Gam flows down from a place called Nant yr Eira.

Flowing Through Villages

The Banwy then flows past a small village named Llanerfyl. It continues to meander, which means it twists and turns, through hills that aren't too high. Eventually, it reaches a bridge in the town of Llanfair Caereinion.

The Final Stretch

For the last five miles of its journey, the River Banwy turns north. It flows through a narrow valley. People in this area sometimes call this part of the river 'Yr Hafesb'. The river also passes by Mathrafal. This place was once very important. It was the home and court of the kings of Powys a long time ago. Finally, the River Banwy meets the River Vyrnwy near a place called Newbridge.
