River Falls Mall is a shopping center located in Clarksville, Indiana. It's on Lewis and Clark Parkway. When it first opened in 1990, it was a large, enclosed mall. This means it was a big building with many stores inside, all connected under one roof. It had about 762,000 square feet of shopping space.

The mall originally featured many stores and fun places like entertainment venues. However, over time, many stores left. So, in 2006, River Falls Mall was changed into a power center. A power center is a shopping area with several large stores, often called big-box stores, that are usually separate buildings or have their own entrances. Today, it includes popular stores like Dick's Sporting Goods, Old Time Pottery, Jo-Ann Fabrics, and Bass Pro Shops.

History of River Falls Mall

River Falls Mall first opened its doors in 1990. It was built right across from another mall called Green Tree Mall. When it opened, it had a huge amount of retail space.

Early Stores and Fun Places

The mall's main stores, called anchor stores, were Walmart and Bacon's. Anchor stores are big, well-known stores that attract many shoppers to a mall. River Falls Mall also had exciting entertainment options. You could play miniature golf or even ride bumper cars! Other stores included Dawahares (which later became All About Sports) and Toys "R" Us.

In 1998, a company bought Bacon's. This led to Dillard's taking over the Bacon's building. Dillard's used this space for men's and children's clothes, plus home items. Their main women's clothing store stayed at Green Tree Mall. Even though the mall often had many empty stores, things looked up for a bit in 1999. That's when a Dick's Sporting Goods store opened, and the mall became 92 percent full.

Big Changes and New Stores

Around 2002, Bass Pro Shops started talking about opening a store at the mall. Construction for their new store began in early 2004. At this time, Dillard's closed its store at River Falls. All of its departments moved back to the Green Tree Mall location. Soon after, the movie theater closed down. Walmart also moved out of the mall to a new, bigger store called a Supercenter.

After Walmart left, Dick's Sporting Goods moved into the old Walmart building. In 2005, the new Bass Pro Shops finally opened. This was a huge change for the mall. It took up a lot of the space that used to be inside the enclosed mall. Only Toys "R" Us, the old Dillard's, and the old Walmart buildings remained standing.

Becoming a Power Center

Since Bass Pro Shops opened, the mall has been "de-malled." This means it changed from an enclosed mall to a power center with large, separate stores. New stores like Old Time Pottery and Louisville Athletic Club opened. They took over parts of the old Walmart section.

A brand new movie theater, Great Escape River Falls 12, opened in November 2006. The rest of the old mall building, between Dick's Sporting Goods and Bass Pro Shops, was changed. It now holds stores like Old Time Pottery, Louisville Athletic Club, and Jo-Ann Fabrics. Toys "R" Us was the last original store from when it was an enclosed mall. However, after the company went out of business in 2018, that store also closed.
