Exploring the River Gwili
Where Does the Gwili Flow?
The River Gwili starts its journey in the Brechfa Forest, which is east of a place called Llanllawddog. From there, it flows west through Llanpumsaint. It then meets another river, the River Duad, just south of Cynwyl Elfed village. After this, the Gwili turns southeast, flowing through Bronwydd before finally joining the River Tywi at Abergwili.
What's in a Name?
The River Gwili is so important to the area that many places are named after it! You'll find settlements (small towns or villages) that share its name. Even the Glangwili General Hospital gets its name from this river.
The Gwili Railway
Did you know that a railway line once followed the path of the River Gwili? The old Carmarthen Aberystwyth Line used to run right alongside the river between Abergwili and Llanpumsaint. Even today, you can still see parts of this old railway line along the valley.
In 1978, a special part of this old line was reopened in Bronwydd. It became a heritage railway, which means it's a railway that keeps old trains running for fun and history. This special railway was given the name Gwili Railway, celebrating its connection to the river.
Fun on the River
The River Gwili is a popular spot for outdoor activities. Many people enjoy fishing in its waters. It's also a great place for canoeists, who love to paddle along its course.
