The River Kemp is a small river in England. It flows through a county called Shropshire and eventually joins a bigger river called the River Clun.

Where Does the River Kemp Flow?

The River Kemp starts when two smaller streams meet. These streams flow from the area around a town called Bishops Castle. One stream comes from the west, near Bishops Moat, and flows southeast. The other stream comes from the east, near Lea, and flows southwest. They join together east of a place called Colebatch.

Journey to the Clun River

From where it begins, the River Kemp flows south. It passes through a small village called Brockton. Then, it turns southeast and goes through the beautiful grounds of Walcot Hall, near Lydbury North.

At Walcot Hall, the river helps fill a big lake known as Walcot Pool. People say this lake was built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic War.

South of Walcot Park, the river flows under the Shropshire Way, which is a walking path. It then goes through the village of Kempton. In Kempton, you can find a ford (a shallow place to cross a river) and a footbridge.

The river continues flowing south until it reaches the Clun valley, near Clunbury. It joins the larger River Clun east of Clunbury, at a spot called Oaker, near Aston on Clun.

How Long is the River Kemp?

The River Kemp is about 10.7 miles (17.3 km) long. The area of land that drains water into the River Kemp is called its drainage basin. This basin covers about 51 square kilometres (20 sq mi) of land. It is located between the drainage basins of the River Unk to the west and the River Onny to the north.

What About the River's Health?

Scientists check the health of rivers to make sure they are good for plants and animals. In 2009, the River Kemp was thought to have a "moderate" ecological quality. This means it was doing okay, but could be better.

However, by 2016, its health got worse and was rated as "poor." This shows that the river needs more care to help its environment. On the bright side, the chemical quality of the water has stayed good during this time.
