Physical characteristics
Main source Southeast side of Dartmoor, near Haytor
Length 9.9 miles (15.9 km)

The River Lemon is a river in southwest England. It flows for about 9.9 miles (16 kilometers) through the county of Devon. This river is a smaller branch, or tributary, of the River Teign.

The River Lemon starts high up on Dartmoor, near a place called Haytor. It then flows through different areas before joining the River Teign in Newton Abbot. Along its journey, it meets other small streams like the River Sig and Langworthy Brook near Sigford. It also passes by the village of Bickington.

Further downstream, the Kestor Brook joins the River Lemon. The river then flows through the beautiful woods of Bradley Valley, past the historic Bradley manor house. Finally, it goes through the town of Newton Abbot. In the town center, the river flows through a long tunnel, about 440 yards (400 meters) long. Just outside Newton Abbot, the River Lemon flows into the River Teign near its wide mouth, called an estuary.

The name Lemon comes from an old Celtic word. This word means elm, which is a type of tree.

Why Does the River Lemon Flood?

The River Lemon has caused big floods in Newton Abbot many times. Some of the most serious floods happened in 1853, 1894, 1938, and 1979. To help stop these floods, a special dam and a reservoir (a place to store water) were built in 1982. This flood control system is located near Holbeam, where the Kestor Brook joins the River Lemon.

How Was the River Lemon Used by Industry?

For many years, the River Lemon played a part in local industry. From 1898 to 1974, the Newton Abbot power station used water from the nearby River Teign to cool its machines. After using the water, the power station would release it into the River Lemon.
