River Nairn at Inverarnie

The River Nairn (Scottish Gaelic: Narann / Abhainn Narann) is a cool river in the Scottish Highlands. It's about 35 miles (56 kilometers) long. This river flows through some beautiful parts of Scotland. It's known for its clear waters and the history along its banks.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The name "Nairn" comes from an old language. This language was called Pictish. It was spoken by people who lived in Scotland a very long time ago. The name might mean "flow" or "swim." Another place in Wales, called Nevern, might have a similar name origin.

Following the River's Journey

The River Nairn starts high up in the Monadhliath Mountains. It flows northeast through a valley called Strathnairn. Finally, it reaches the Moray Firth at the town of Nairn.

The river begins as two small streams. These streams are called the Allt Mor and Crom-allt Beag. They flow steeply down the side of Càrn Ghriogair mountain. Their waters join together under the B851 road. Then, they turn and flow northeast.

Soon, a small river called the River Brin joins the Nairn. Later, a stream from the big Loch Duntelchaig also adds its water. The River Farnack is the next river to join. After that, the Craggie Burn flows in near the A9 road crossing at Daviot.

The river keeps flowing past Drummossie Moor. This moor is to the northwest of the river. It also flows past Culloden Moor. This famous place was where a big battle happened in 1746.

The Nairn then goes under the Culloden Viaduct. This viaduct carries the main railway line. This line connects Perth and Inverness. The river then runs between Culloden Forest and Assich Forest. It passes under the B9090 road between Clephanton and Cawdor.

Its last major tributary is the Allt Dearg. This river joins from the right side. The Nairn continues northeast. It passes under the B9090 road one more time. Then, it reaches the town of Nairn.

The Allt Dearg and its main tributary, the Riereach Burn, start on the northern slopes of Carn nan Trì Tighearnan. They flow north to meet the River Nairn.
