River Thurso facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The River Thurso (Scottish Gaelic: Abhainn Theòrsa) is an important river in Scotland. It flows through the beautiful area of Caithness. This river starts in the hills and makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean. It's a key part of the local landscape and history.

Where the River Begins

The River Thurso starts at a place called Loch Rumsdale. This loch is a lake located in Caithness. It's about 26 kilometers south of the town of Thurso. It's also about 14 kilometers west of Thurso.

Near its start, the river is also known as Strathmore Water. This name is used until it reaches Loch More. Caithness is part of the Highland region of Scotland.

The River's Path

From Loch Rumsdale, the river flows generally east and southeast. It travels about 4 kilometers. Then, it is joined by another water source called Glutt Water.

After that, the river flows northeast for about 7 kilometers. It then enters the southern end of Loch More. On the eastern side of Loch More, the river quickly flows into Loch Beg.

From the eastern end of Loch Beg, the river continues east and northeast. It flows for about 6 kilometers. Here, it is joined by the Little River.

Journey to the Sea

From the Little River, the River Thurso flows mostly north. It travels about 19 kilometers. Finally, it reaches its mouth in Thurso Bay. This bay opens into the Atlantic Ocean.

On its way, the river passes through the village of Halkirk. Halkirk is about 9 kilometers south of the town of Thurso. The river also flows right through the town of Thurso itself. The town is located along the bay.

Bridges Over the River

The River Thurso has several bridges crossing it. These bridges help people and trains get across.

Railway Bridges

Trains cross the river in two places. About 4 kilometers south of Thurso town, a railway bridge connects Wick and Thurso. About 6 kilometers further south, another railway bridge links both towns with Inverness.

Road Bridges

Cars and other vehicles cross the river on three main roads. These road bridges are located in the town of Thurso, in Halkirk village, and at Westerdale. Westerdale is about 16 kilometers south of Thurso town.

Footbridges

There were three footbridges for people to walk across in Thurso town. However, one of these footbridges was recently damaged. It was destroyed by the river during a time of heavy flooding.
