Where Does the River Yeo Begin?
The Barnstaple Yeo starts on a place called Berry Down. This is south of a village named Combe Martin. From there, the river flows south.
Its Journey to the Sea
As the river travels, it passes through some interesting places. It flows through the beautiful grounds of Arlington Court. It also goes past the village of Chelfham. Finally, the River Yeo reaches Barnstaple. Here, it joins the larger River Taw. The whole journey from where it starts to where it meets the Taw is about 20 kilometers (or 12.4 miles) long.
Why Does the River Yeo Sometimes Flood?
The last part of the River Yeo, about one mile long, is affected by the ocean's tides. This means the water level in this section goes up and down with the sea.
Dealing with High Water
Because of this, the river can flood. This happens when there's a lot of rain, making the river flow very fast. It can also flood when the sea level is very high. To help stop these floods, there's a plan to create a new path for the river. This new path would be about 25 meters (or 82 feet) wide. It would go through Pilton Park in Barnstaple. This project aims to protect the area from very big floods.
