The Rivière aux Brochets is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Ashuapmushuan River. A "tributary" is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river. This river is located in a wild area called the unorganized territory of Rivière-Mistassini. It's part of the Maria-Chapdelaine Regional County Municipality in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The area around the river is mostly forest. A forest road, R0202, helps people get to the southern part of the river valley. The main activity in this valley is forestry, which means harvesting trees for wood.

Where the River Flows

The Rivière aux Brochets starts at a lake called Stackler Lake. This lake is about 4.7 kilometers long and sits high up, at 386 meters (about 1,266 feet) above sea level. Two mountains, Montagne Plate and Montagne des Bouleaux, are near the northwest side of Stackler Lake. Other lakes, like Lac Vidé, Chanceux, and Lac Denis, feed water into Stackler Lake.

The River's Journey

From Stackler Lake, the Rivière aux Brochets flows for about 11.2 kilometers (about 7 miles). As it flows, it drops 116 meters (about 380 feet) in height. The entire journey is through a forest.

  • First, the river flows northeast, going downhill. It picks up water from Lac au Huard.
  • Then, it reaches Lac du Lance-Pierres and crosses it. This lake is about 1.7 kilometers long. Other lakes, like Lake Judith and the Twin Lakes, also feed into Lac du Lance-Pierres.
  • Next, the river flows southeast in a fairly straight line. It goes through Lac au Sable and Lac des Ménés. It also collects water from a stream that comes from Lake Karina.
  • The last part of this section widens and connects with Damville Lake.
  • Finally, the river turns southwest, passing under the R0202 forest road bridge. It then makes a hook shape to the south, collecting another stream, before reaching its mouth.

Where the River Ends

The Rivière aux Brochets flows into the Ashuapmushuan River. This meeting point is downstream from an area called Rapides du Fer à Cheval.

From this point, the water from the Rivière aux Brochets travels a long way:

  • It flows down the Ashuapmushuan River for about 100.4 kilometers (about 62 miles).
  • Then, it crosses Lac Saint-Jean from west to east, which is about 41.1 kilometers (about 25 miles) long.
  • After that, it follows the Saguenay River for about 172.3 kilometers (about 107 miles) to Tadoussac.
  • Finally, it joins the huge estuary of Saint Lawrence, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.
