The Rivière des Roches is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the famous Saint Lawrence river. This river is located in the town of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures. This area is part of the Portneuf Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The river valley is important for farming and forestry. Roads like Route 138 help people get around. These roads also support the local economy. The river usually freezes from December to March. It's safe to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The water level changes with the seasons and rain. The river floods in March or April when the snow melts.

Where the River Starts and Ends
The Rivière des Roches begins in a forest. This forest is in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures. The starting point is near Neuville and north of Saint-Nicolas village. It's about 8 kilometers west of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures town center. The river's source is also close to the Canadian National train tracks.
The river flows for about 9.6 kilometers. It drops about 13 meters from its source to its end.
River's Journey
- The river flows east for 3.5 kilometers. It makes a curve towards the south. It passes through forests and then farms. It also crosses the Canadian National tracks.
- Next, it flows northeast for 1.3 kilometers. It runs next to Highway 40. Here, it meets the Dorval stream.
- Then, it turns south for 2.0 kilometers. It goes through farmland and crosses the Canadian Pacific tracks. It reaches Route 138.
- Finally, it flows southeast for 2.8 kilometers. It passes the Cascade des Roches. It also crosses the Chemin du Roy road. The river then bends east before reaching its mouth.
The Rivière des Roches joins the Saint Lawrence river downstream from the Dombourg islets. This meeting point is about 16.1 kilometers southwest of the Pierre Laporte Bridge. It's also 3.4 kilometers southwest of the center of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures.
Why is it Called Rivière des Roches?
The name "Rivière des Roches" means "River of Rocks." Local people gave it this name because its bed is very rocky. There are many other rivers in Quebec with similar names. It was also known as Ruisseau Dorval or Rivière des Rouches. The Desroches family even got their nickname from this river.
The name "Rivière des Roches" became official on December 5, 1968. This was decided by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
