The Rivière du Petit Sault is a river located in Quebec, Canada. Its name means "Small Sault River" in English. This river flows through two towns: Saint-Éloi and L'Isle-Verte. It is a small stream that eventually joins the mighty St. Lawrence River. The river empties into the St. Lawrence near the town of L'Isle-Verte.
Where the River Starts and Flows
The Petit Sault River begins in Saint-Éloi. It starts from small streams that run through farms. This starting point is about 6.1 km (3.8 mi) southeast of the estuary of Saint Lawrence. It is also about 3.5 km (2.2 mi) northeast of the center of Saint-Éloi village.
From its source, the river flows for about 12.2 km (7.6 mi) through farmland. Here is how it travels:
- It flows 3.2 km (2.0 mi) west in Saint-Éloi.
- Then, it turns northwest for 4.1 km (2.5 mi).
- It continues northwest for 0.5 km (0.31 mi) until it reaches the town of L'Isle-Verte.
- The river then heads west for 1.3 km (0.81 mi), crossing Highway 20.
- It flows another 2.3 km (1.4 mi) westward, picking up water from another small stream.
- Finally, it travels 0.8 km (0.50 mi) northwest. It crosses the Canadian National train tracks and Route 132. This is where it meets the St. Lawrence River.
The Petit Sault River ends in a bay called Anse Verte. This bay is part of the St. Lawrence River near the village of L'Isle-Verte. It is across from Île aux Pommes, an island about 5.1 km (3.2 mi) from the shore. This meeting point is about 6.1 km (3.8 mi) northeast of the center of L'Isle-Verte.
