Rix Mills is a small, unincorporated community located in Muskingum County, Ohio. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county.

The Story of Rix Mills: A Look Back

The community of Rix Mills got its name from a man named Edmond Rix. He owned a local mill, which was a building that used water power to grind grain into flour. For a while, the community was also known as Rixville.

Rixville was officially started in 1854. Before that, in 1846, a post office called Rixs Mills was opened there. A few years later, on April 20, 1858, land was bought to build a school in Rix Mills, showing the community was growing. The post office changed its name to Rix Mills in 1892 but closed down in 1902. Even though the post office closed, Rix Mills has always been a place with local stores and a church. The church is still an important spot for people to gather and for community events today.

Who's Who from Rix Mills?

A notable person born in Rix Mills was Miles Conway Moore. He was born there in 1845. Miles Conway Moore later became the 14th Governor of Washington Territory. A governor is like the main leader of a state or, in this case, a territory, which is an area of land that is part of a country but not yet a full state.
