Robert Guillory, born on June 2, 1982, is an American artist who creates comic books. He is famous for his artwork on the comic series Chew. This series was published by Image Comics. Today, he writes and draws another comic called Farmhand for Image Comics. He also writes a comic called Mosely for Boom! Studios.

Growing Up and School

Rob Guillory grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. He started making his own comics very early, at just four years old. He used construction paper for his first drawings.

Later, he went to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There, he studied computer animation. He also drew pictures for the college newspaper.

Comic Book Career

Rob Guillory became well-known as the artist for the comic book series Chew. John Layman wrote this series. Guillory did all the art, including the pencils, inks, and colors.

In 2010, he won the Harvey Award for best new talent because of his work on Chew. The Chew series also won the 2010 Harvey Award for best new series. It received the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2010. In 2011, it won the Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series. These are big awards in the comic book world.

Creating Farmhand

After Chew finished in 2016, Guillory decided to create his own science fiction series. This new series was called Farmhand. It is published by Image Comics. Guillory writes, pencils, and inks this series himself. Taylor Wells adds the colors.

Farmhand tells the story of a "body farmer." This is a person who grows human organs. Guillory started working on Farmhand in December 2016. This was about a month after Chew ended.

Before Chew, Guillory had written his own stories. He asked other writer-artists about their routines. This helped him improve his own creative process. He writes very detailed scripts for his comics. He writes them as if another artist would draw them.

When he first told John Layman about Farmhand, Layman suggested waiting. He thought Guillory might get "typecast." This means people might only see him as "the guy who does really weird stories." Guillory did not tell Image Comics about the project until mid-2017.

Farmhand received mostly good reviews when it first came out. The first issue scored high with critics. Readers were surprised by the story. They expected it to be only funny. Instead, they found the characters had real depth.

Other Projects

In April 2022, Guillory joined many other comic creators. They contributed to a special book called Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds. This book was created to help Ukrainian refugees. Guillory and John Layman worked together on a new Chew story for this book.

In January 2023, Guillory launched another comic series he created. It is called Mosley and is from Boom! Studios. This science fiction and fantasy series is drawn by Sam Lotfi. For Mosley, Guillory is the writer, but not the artist.
