Early Life and Learning
Rob Guillory was born and grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. He started making his own comics very early. He drew his first comics on construction paper when he was just four years old.
Later, he went to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There, he studied computer animation. He also drew pictures for the college newspaper.
His Comic Book Career
Rob Guillory first became well-known for his art in the comic book series Chew. John Layman wrote the story for Chew. Rob Guillory did all the drawing, inking, and coloring for the series.
His amazing work on Chew earned him the 2010 Harvey Award for best new talent. Chew also won the 2010 Harvey Award for best new series. It also won the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2010. The series won the Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series in 2011 too.
After Chew finished in 2016, Guillory decided to create his own new series. He launched a science fiction comic called Farmhand with Image Comics. For this series, he writes, draws, and inks the pages himself. Taylor Wells adds the colors. The story is about a "body farmer" who grows human organs.
Guillory started working on Farmhand in December 2016. He had written his own stories before Chew. He asked other writer/artists about their work routines. He writes very detailed scripts for his comics.
Farmhand received many good reviews when it first came out. Readers were surprised by the story. They expected it to be funny, but found the characters had real depth.
In 2022, Rob Guillory helped with a special project. He joined many other comic creators for a book called Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds. This book helped raise money for Ukrainian refugees. Guillory and John Layman created a new Chew story for this special book.
In 2023, Guillory launched another comic series he created called Mosley. This science fiction and fantasy series is from Boom! Studios. Sam Lotfi draws the art for Mosley. This was the first time Guillory wrote a comic without also drawing it.
