Her Life Story

Her Early Life

Robbie was born on a farm near Big Flat, Arkansas. When she was only four years old, her father passed away. She then grew up with her grandparents on another farm. They were not rich. Robbie stopped going to school after the seventh grade. Even though she left school, she loved to read books. She also enjoyed writing poems and songs. To earn a living, she worked on farms. At 15, she married Dwane Branscum. She had a daughter and later divorced when she was 25.

Becoming a Writer

Robbie's life changed when her church newsletter, from the Southern Baptist group, printed an article she had written. This made her decide to become an author. Her first book was called Me and Jim Luke, published in 1971.

Robbie Branscum published 20 books over 20 years. Some of her books were translated into other languages, like Danish, Italian, Japanese, and Swedish. She worked with a literary agent named Barthold Fles.

In 1977, she won an Award of Merit from the Friends of American Writers for her book Toby, Granny and George. In 1983, she won an Edgar Award for The Murder of Hound Dog Bates.
