Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Boyd, 8th Lord Boyd (born around 1618 – died 17 November 1640), was an important Scottish nobleman and politician. He played a part in the history of Scotland during a time of big changes.

Robert Boyd's Life and Role

Robert Boyd was the only son of Robert Boyd, 7th Lord Boyd. He was born around the year 1618. When he was about 16 years old, on November 25, 1634, he became a J.P. for an area called Cuningham. A Justice of the Peace was a local official who helped keep law and order.

Standing Up for Beliefs

In 1638, Robert Boyd showed his strong beliefs. On February 22, he joined other noblemen in Edinburgh. They went to the mercat cross, which was a public meeting spot. There, they protested against a new rule from King Charles. This rule was about a new prayer book for the church.

The next year, in March, Robert Boyd signed the National Covenant. This was a special promise made in the churchyard of Greyfriars Kirk. By signing, he promised to defend the Scottish church. He worked closely with the Covenanters. These were people who opposed King Charles's changes to their religion.

Robert Boyd was also involved in the Scottish Parliament. He was present at meetings on August 31, 1639, and June 2, 1640. Sadly, he died from a fever on November 17, 1640.

His Family

Robert Boyd was the only son of his father's second wife. He married Anne, who was the second daughter of John Fleming, 2nd Earl of Wigtown. Her mother was Margaret, daughter of Alexander Livingstone, 1st Earl of Linlithgow.

Even though Robert Boyd married Anne, they did not have any sons. Because of this, his title as Lord Boyd passed to his uncle, James Boyd, 9th Lord Boyd. Robert's sister, Marion, married James Dundas, Lord Arniston.
