Robert Boyd, 7th Lord Boyd (born November 1595 – died 28 August 1628) was an important Scottish noble. He held the title of Lord Boyd, which was a high rank in Scotland. He lived during a time of many changes in Scottish history.

Robert Boyd's Early Life

Robert Boyd was born in November 1595. His mother was Jean Kerr and his father was Robert Boyd. Sadly, his father passed away in 1597, before Robert's grandfather died. This meant that young Robert would later inherit the title.

His mother, Jean, later married David Lindsay, who was the 12th Earl of Crawford. After they divorced, she married Thomas Hamilton. Robert's grandparents on his mother's side were Mark Kerr, the 1st Earl of Lothian, and Margaret Maxwell.

Robert Boyd went to school at the University of Saumur. This university was in France.

Becoming Lord Boyd

In June 1611, Robert Boyd became the 7th Lord Boyd. He received this important title after his grandfather, Thomas Boyd, 6th Lord Boyd, passed away. This made him a powerful figure in Scottish society.

Robert Boyd's Family Life

Lord Boyd was married two times during his life.

His first marriage was around 1614 to Margaret Montgomerie. She was the widow of Hugh Montgomerie, who was the Earl of Eglintoun. Margaret was the oldest daughter of Robert Montgomerie of Giffen. She was still his wife in March 1616, but she passed away later that year. They did not have any children together.

Lord Boyd married for a second time on December 9, 1617. His second wife was Lady Christian Lindsay. She was the widow of Robert Lindsay, 9th Lord Lindsay. Lady Christian was the oldest daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington.

Robert and Christian had several children together:

  • Isabel Boyd: She married John Sinclair of Stevenson in 1638. After he passed away, she married Sir John Grierson of Lag in 1646.
  • Christian Boyd: She married Sir William Scott of Harden in 1641.
  • Jean Boyd: She married Sir Alexander Morison.
  • Robert Boyd, 8th Lord Boyd: Born around 1618, he later became the next Lord Boyd. He married Lady Anne Fleming in 1639.
  • Marion Boyd: Born in 1624, she married Sir James Dundas, Lord Arniston, in 1641.

His Later Years

Robert Boyd passed away on August 28, 1628. He was 33 years old. His will, which is a legal document about his wishes, was written in 1623 and officially approved in 1632.

His wife, Lady Christian, was a strong supporter of the Presbyterian church. She passed away peacefully around January 1646 at her daughter Lady Scott's home.
