Robert Lindsay: A Scottish Lord
Robert Lindsay was born into an important Scottish family. His parents were James Lindsay, 7th Lord Lindsay and Lady Eupheme Leslie. He was their second son.
His Early Life and Family
Robert had an older brother named John Lindsay, 8th Lord Lindsay. John was supposed to inherit the family title. Robert also had sisters named Jane, Helen, and Catherine.
His grandparents on his father's side were Patrick Lindsay, 6th Lord Lindsay and Euphemia Douglas. His mother's parents were Andrew Leslie, 5th Earl of Rothes and Grizel Hamilton.
What He Did as a Lord
When his older brother John passed away in November 1609 without any sons, Robert became the 9th Lord Lindsay. This meant he inherited the family's lands and title, known as the Lordship Lindsay of the Byres.
After Robert became Lord, the Byres estate was sold. It was bought by his father-in-law, Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington.
Lord Lindsay also held important roles in Scotland. He was the Scottish Ecclesiastical High Commissioner. This was a special representative for the King at important church meetings. He also became a Privy Councillor in 1610 and again in 1616. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the King of Scotland.
His Family Life
On June 26, 1610, Robert Lindsay married Lady Christian Hamilton. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington.
Robert and Christian had several children together:
- John Lindsay (born around 1611), who later became an Earl.
- Patrick Lindsay, who sadly passed away when he was young.
- Helen Lindsay, who married Sir William Scott of Ardross in 1634.
- Margaret Lindsay.
Lord Lindsay passed away on July 9, 1616. His only surviving son, John, took over the title of Lord Lindsay. John later became the 1st Earl of Lindsay in 1633 and also inherited the Earldom of Crawford in 1652.
After Robert's death, Lady Christian married again. She married Robert Boyd, 7th Lord Boyd. Lady Christian passed away in 1645.
His Children and Grandchildren
Through his daughter Helen, Lord Lindsay had a granddaughter named Euphemia Scott. She married William Cochrane, 1st Earl of Dundonald.
Through his son John, Lord Lindsay had many more grandchildren. These included Lady Anne Lindsay, Lady Christian Lindsay, William Lindsay, 18th Earl of Crawford, Patrick Lindsay, Lady Helen Lindsay, and Lady Elizabeth Lindsay.
