Andrew Leslie, 5th Earl of Rothes (born before 1541 – died 1611) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Rothes and played a role in the politics of Scotland during a time of big changes.
Andrew Leslie's Early Life
Andrew Leslie was the son of George Leslie, 4th Earl of Rothes. His mother was Agnes Somerville.
He became the 5th Earl of Rothes in 1558. This happened because his older half-brothers, Norman Leslie and William Leslie, had lost their right to inherit the title. They had been involved in a serious event in 1546, which meant they could not become Earl.
His Role in Scotland
Andrew Leslie was very active in Scottish politics. He first joined a group called the Lords of the Congregation. This group was against Mary of Guise, who was ruling Scotland at the time.
Later, he also opposed Mary, Queen of Scots. He disagreed with her marriage to Lord Darnley. He was also involved in a plan against one of the queen's advisors, David Rizzio.
However, Andrew Leslie later changed his support. He was part of a group of nobles who cleared Bothwell of charges related to Lord Darnley's death. After this, he sided with Queen Mary. He even fought for her at the Battle of Langside. He continued to be an important figure in Scotland until he passed away in 1611.
His Family
In 1547, Andrew Leslie married Grizel Hamilton. She was the daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. Their marriage needed special permission, which cost a lot of money at the time.
Andrew and Grizel had several children, including:
- James Leslie, Master of Rothes: He married Hon. Margaret Lindsay.
- Patrick Leslie (died 1608): He became the 1st Lord Lindores. He married Jean Stewart, who was a daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney. Robert Stewart was a son of King James V of Scotland.
- Eupheme Leslie: She married James Lindsay, 7th Lord Lindsay in 1573.
Andrew Leslie's oldest son, James, passed away before him. Because of this, Andrew's grandson, John Leslie (James's son), became the 6th Earl of Rothes after Andrew's death.
