Robert Clyve Maynard (June 17, 1937 – August 17, 1993) was an important American journalist. He was also a newspaper publisher and editor. Robert Maynard was the owner of The Oakland Tribune newspaper. He also helped start the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education in Oakland, California.

Robert Maynard's Life Story
Early Years and Dreams
Robert Maynard was born on June 17, 1937. He was one of six children. His parents, Samuel C. Maynard and Robertine Isola Greaves, came from Barbados. When he was 16, Robert left high school. He wanted to follow his dream of becoming a writer.
He became friends with famous writers in New York, like James Baldwin and Langston Hughes. Robert also looked up to Martin Luther King, Jr. as a hero.
A Career in Journalism
Robert Maynard started his journalism career in 1961. He worked at the York Gazette & Daily newspaper in York, Pennsylvania. In 1965, he won a special scholarship called a Nieman Fellowship. This allowed him to study at Harvard University. The next year, he joined the team at Washington Post newspaper.
In 1979, Robert Maynard became the editor of The Oakland Tribune. Four years later, he bought the newspaper. This made him the first African American to own a major city newspaper. He is famous for helping the newspaper become successful again. In 1990, The Oakland Tribune even won a Pulitzer Prize, which is a very important award for journalism.
Robert Maynard believed in helping his community. He taught at local high schools. He also often went to community meetings. He used his newspaper to make the community better. He worked to improve schools, create better healthcare, and help the economy grow.
The Institute for Journalism Education
In 1977, Robert Maynard helped create the Institute for Journalism Education. This group is a non-profit organization. Its goal is to train journalists of color. It also works to make sure that news stories show different groups of people fairly. For over 30 years, the Institute has trained more than 1,000 journalists and editors. These people come from many different backgrounds across the United States.
His Family and Legacy
Robert Maynard co-founded the Institute with his second wife, Nancy Hicks Maynard. After he passed away in 1993, the Institute was renamed in his honor. He died from a serious illness. His daughter, Dori J. Maynard, later became the president and CEO of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.
