Sir Robert Walter Carden (born October 7, 1801 – died January 19, 1888) was an important British banker and a politician from the Conservative Party. He was known for his work in finance and for serving in key roles in London's government and in the British Parliament.

Early Life and Career
Robert Carden was the son of James Carden and Mary Walter. His mother, Mary, was the daughter of John Walter, who started the famous newspaper called The Times.
When he was 15 years old, in 1816, Robert Carden joined the army. He became an officer in the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot.
A Successful Banker
After his time in the army, Robert Carden became a very successful banker. Because of his achievements, he was given the title of "Sir" in 1851. This means he was knighted.
Leading London's Government
Sir Robert Carden took on important roles in the government of London. In 1850, he served as the Sheriff of London. The Sheriff helps manage the city's legal and financial matters.
Later, in 1857, he was chosen to be the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very important and respected position, like being the main leader of the city.
Serving in Parliament
Sir Robert Carden also worked as a politician in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for the country.
First Time in Parliament
In 1857, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Gloucester. He held this job until 1859.
Return to Politics
After being out of Parliament for more than 20 years, he returned in 1880. He was elected as an MP for Barnstaple. He continued to serve in Parliament until 1885.
Justice of the Peace
Besides his work in banking and politics, Sir Robert Carden also served as a Justice of the Peace. This means he helped keep law and order in the areas of Surrey and Middlesex.
Later Life and Family
In June 1887, when he was 85 years old, Sir Robert Carden was given a special honor. He was made a baronet of Molesey in the County of Surrey. This means he received a hereditary title, which could be passed down to his eldest son.
Sir Robert Carden married Pamela Elizabeth Edith Smith Andrews in 1827. They had a large family with three sons and seven daughters. Pamela died in 1874. Sir Robert lived for 14 more years after her.
He passed away in January 1888, at the age of 86. His eldest son, Frederick, took over his baronet title. Sir Robert Walter Carden is buried with his wife and two of their children at Kensal Green Cemetery.
