The Robert Carleton House is a very old and special house in Sangerville, Maine. It was built around 1819. This makes it one of the oldest buildings still standing in Piscataquis County. The house has a unique style called Federal. It was built by Robert Carleton on land he bought from his brother. In 1975, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important building that should be protected.

About the Robert Carleton House

The Carleton House is a two-and-a-half story building. It is made of wood and has a sloped roof. There are two chimneys inside near the sides. The house sits on a strong foundation made of granite stone.

What the House Looks Like

The front of the house faces south. It has five sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. It has tall, narrow windows on each side. Above the door is a decorative frame. This frame has flat columns and a fancy top part. All the windows have 12 small panes of glass on the top and 12 on the bottom.

A smaller, one-story part extends from the back of the house. This part was likely added soon after the house was built.

Inside the House

When you go inside, there is a hallway in the middle. On each side of the hall, there are two rooms. This layout is common for houses of that time. These rooms still have their original woodwork from the Federal period. This includes the fireplace decorations, wood panels on the walls, and doors.

History of the Carleton House

The town of Sangerville was first settled around 1801 or 1802. An early settler named Thomas Prince started a special kind of mill. This mill was called a fulling mill. It was built on a stream now known as Carleton Stream. This stream flows into the nearby Piscataquis River. A fulling mill was used to clean and thicken wool cloth.

The Carleton Brothers

One of Thomas Prince's workers was Guy Carleton. In 1818, Guy bought the land where the Robert Carleton House now stands. The very next year, he sold the land to his brother, Robert. Robert then built this house.

Robert Carleton was an important person in the local army group, called the militia. He was active during a disagreement over the border with New Brunswick. This event was known as the Aroostook War. Guy Carleton later started his own mill. His business continued to operate well into the 1900s.
