Robert Craigie (born 1754, died 1834) was an important Scottish lawyer. He became a judge, known as a Lord of Session. He was also a Senator of the College of Justice, which is like being a high-ranking judge in Scotland's main court.

Robert Craigie's Life Story

Robert Craigie was born in 1754 at Dunbarney House. He was the second son of Anne Craigie and John Craigie. His father was also a relative, John Craigie of Kilgraston. Robert's grandfather, Lawrence Craigie, was a Baron of the Exchequer, a type of financial judge.

Robert studied law to become a lawyer. He officially became an advocate in July 1776. An advocate is a lawyer who speaks in court. Around 1785, he lived and worked in Edinburgh. His office was in Covenant Close on the famous Royal Mile.

In 1786, he got an important job. He was made Sheriff Depute of Orkney. This meant he was a chief legal officer for that area. In 1791, he became Sheriff of Dumfriesshire.

By 1800, Robert Craigie was living and working from 17 North Frederick Street in Edinburgh.

In 1811, he was chosen to be a Senator of the College of Justice. He took the place of William Baillie, Lord Polkemmet, who had retired. This was a very high position in the Scottish legal system.

In 1814, he lived at 90 George Street. This address was in Edinburgh's New Town.

Robert Craigie never married or had children. He passed away in 1834 at his home on 90 George Street in Edinburgh. He is buried with his parents. Their burial place is in Dunbarney, west of Bridge of Earn in Perthshire.

Robert Craigie had several notable family members. His great uncle was Robert Craigie, Lord Glendoick. Robert also had two brothers. They were John Craigie and Lawrence Craigie. Lawrence was the Lord Provost of Glasgow twice. A Lord Provost is like the mayor of a city. His nephews included Rear Admiral Robert Craigie RN, who was a high-ranking officer in the Royal Navy.
