Early Life and Family

Robert Daly was born in 1783 at Dunsandle Castle in Loughrea, Ireland. This castle was a new home built by his father, Denis Daly. Robert's family, the Dalys, were originally Roman Catholic. However, his grandfather and father changed to the Protestant faith. This change helped them keep their land and power. By the year 1800, the Daly family owned a lot of land in Ireland. They were also very influential in the city of Galway for about 60 years. Robert's mother was Lady Henrietta Maxwell. Her father was Robert Maxwell, who was the first Earl of Farnham.

Education and Church Career

Robert Daly studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and finished his degree in 1803. After college, he became a deacon and then a priest in the Church of Ireland. In 1814, he became the Rector of Powerscourt. A rector is a type of priest who leads a local church.

Leading the Evangelicals

Robert Daly became a key leader of the Evangelical group within the Church of Ireland. Evangelicals are Christians who focus on personal faith and spreading their beliefs. He wrote more than 22 publications between 1815 and his death, mostly about his Evangelical views.

Supporting Education Initiatives

Daly was very keen on spreading the Protestant faith. He helped start the Irish Society for Promoting the Education of the Native Irish through the Medium of Their Own Language in 1818. This group aimed to educate Irish people using their own language. In 1839, he also supported setting up the Church Education Society. This society was created to offer a different kind of education compared to the National School system in Ireland.
